Media / LegalMichael Beaver
- Michael Beaver was a troubled young man, who approached Kenja when he was 19. He was living with his father at the time.
- He came from a troubled family, with two brothers from the same mother (Wendy Beaver) but different fathers. He and his brother Steve met Ken and both admired and respected Ken.
- Stephen’s background and association with drugs and petty criminality meant he could not participate in Kenja activities. Michael however wanted to cut from the drug culture and of his own decision, did so.
- Michael was to tell people that his time in Kenja was one of the happiest in his life.
- He had bad acne, which cleared up whilst he did the Kenja training.
- His father attended Kenja and supported and approved of Michael’s involvement in Kenja. Approximately 12 months after his involvement with Kenja activities began, Michael succumbed to pressure from his brother, who took him to have unprotected sex with a prostitute. We attempted to alert him to the possibility of AIDS and advised him to have an AIDS test.
- This association with his brother led Michael back into the drug culture which sadly meant his being unable to participate in Kenja activities. Approximately 2 years later, Michael surfaced in a psychiatric hospital with a severe substance abuse problem and was diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic.
- His mother Wendy Beaver appears never to have been able to accept his condition.
- Presumably through publicity, generated by Stephen Mutch and Annette Stephens/ Bianchi, Wendy Beaver came into contact with these two people.
- From this point she appears to have been a willing convert to the theory that Michael did not have a substance abuse problem and was not paranoid schizophrenic. She converted to the idea that he had been “brainwashed” in Kenja – and that a “deprogramming” would cure him.
- Wendy tries to get Michael to denounce and attack Ken and Kenja in the press but he won’t.
- At the end of 1992, Wendy removes Michael from the psychiatric hospital in Sydney, in order for him to be “deprogrammed” by someone doing their PhD thesis on “the Kenja cult”.
- She takes Michael down to Melbourne and they both stay with Annette Stephens. Annette then takes Wendy and Michael to the home of a friend of hers, a woman who has also previously been asked to leave Kenja.
- This woman has 3 daughters, all of whom are present at this meeting with Michael and his mother and Annette.
- Annette and this woman bring a man called Martin Katchen to this meeting.
- Martin is studying his PhD in cults under Rachel Kohn (ABC Religious Programming).
- Michael apparently has been taken off his medication (which was the only thing helping him up to this point).
- At this “meeting” Michael is encouraged to bring up negative things about Kenja and conditioned to the viewpoint that Kenja is the source of his problems.
- Michael, after this meeting, supposedly writes a letter denouncing Ken and Kenja, which he had until that point refused to do.
- It is after the writing of this letter that Michael Beaver allegedly suicides.
- Melissa was shown documentary evidence proving what is stated above. When interviewing Wendy Beaver, Annette Stephens/ Bianchi and Stephen Mutch she does not appear to have put this to them.
- Was she timid? Or trying to hide it?
- It is after Michael’s suicide that the attack on Ken and Kenja gathers some momentum.
- Some media, not really interested in Annette Stephens/ Bianchi and Stephen Mutch’s campaign until now, pick up the story of Michael’s suicide.
- Annette Stephens/ Bianchi flaunts Wendy Beaver and Michael’s suicide as her latest weapon to attack Kenja.
- Police exonerate Kenja in their investigation into Michael’s suicide.
- But Mutch, Stephens/ Bianchi and Wendy Beaver promote publicly the idea that Kenja caused Michael’s suicide.
- They withhold the real facts which only emerge during the court case against Ken which begins in 1993 (when Ken was exonerated of all charges).
- It is the 3 girls mentioned above, present at Michael’s “deprogramming”, who 2 months after his suicide and after communication with Stephens/ Banchi and Mutch eventually make allegations. The middle girl of these 3, with her best friend, initiate these charges (through Mutch and Stephens/ Bianchi) – of which Ken is exonerated.
